COFFEE. COFFEE. COFFEE.
I am an addicted coffee drinker. I’m a coffee when I get up, at lunch, dinner and before going to bed kind of girl. Yes, I can drink coffee before going to bed. 😉 I have had to cut back during pregnancy and for breastfeeding, but I still love it nonetheless.
Coffee really isn’t bad for you. In moderation of course but hey, I’m working on it! The stuff that’s bad for you is all that sugar and cream we add to it! At one point I was drinking so much coffee and had strayed from just black coffee. I needed to get myself back on track.
How did I do it? Here are some ways to ease off the sugar and still enjoy that energy boost!
Cinnamon. Cinnamon is everything. It naturally takes the bitterness out of coffee leaving a much smoother flavor. One small shake in an entire pot of coffee will take out ALL the bitterness. Bitterness is probably the reason most people add sugar to their coffee. When I worked as a barista, I was drinking a LOT of caramel lattes. When I decided to cut back on sugar, I took it easy at first. I stopped putting in caramel entirely, but added a shake of cinnamon on top of the milk foam. It took out the bitterness and added flavor. This is great if you are a flavored creamer person!
Adding milk or half and half is a great way, too. Start with as much as you like and slowly start putting less and less in your coffee. If you use almond milk you will get a nutty flavor, too while keeping it dairy free!
Be very strict with it. If you cave once and drink it sugary, it’s a lot harder to go back! Wait until you are used to the new flavor. Chances are, it won’t even taste very good because you are used to the new flavor. Also try to avoid eating a sugary pastry with it. If you take a bite of a doughnut and then take a sip of coffee, you are going to miss that sugar a whole lot more! Of course, after you are used to it, a bitter cup of coffee and a sweet piece of pie make an AWESOME combo! 🙂
Drinking it cold or over ice is a great way, too! You will be able to drink it faster which helps your taste buds get used to it. If you like iced coffee, try making cold press! It’s sooo easy, you can have it prepped in the fridge, and it is sooo much less acidic or bitter. I am a huge dark black coffee drinker. If you can see through the coffee at all, it’s not dark enough. BUT, cold press is actually best made with awful coffee. Weird, I know. But, hey it’s economical, too! 🙂
If you are a person who really, really loves the taste of dark coffee, you may be adding sugar because the coffee is not strong enough. I can’t stand flavored creamers, but if it’s weak coffee I can’t drink it without. I ADORE my French Press. It makes magnificent coffee. It’s also easy to store and beautiful!
