Drinking more water can definitely be a struggle. Try my 10 simple tricks to getting (and staying) hydrated!
1. Keep track
You can’t drink more water if you don’t know how much you are drinking in the first place! Set a goal, measure it out and stick to it. A good way is to pre-measure out your water bottles. For example, a morning, lunch and evening bottle so you know you are taking in the right amount.
2. Be realistic
Set a realistic goal! For example lots of people say you should drink a gallon a day, which is great! But ONLY if your body is needing that much. If you are not active you can overload your body by drinking too much! Click on this link to calculate how much you should be drinking based on your weight and activity level.
3. Spicy foods
This is a little trick I came up with while I was pregnant and needed to take in a lot of fluids. Add some spice to your food! I’m not talking about burn your mouth out spice, just enough to make you want to reach for that glass of water. A glass that you may have struggled to drink can be downed pretty quickly when you add some hot sauce to your meal!
4. Flavor it!
No I don’t mean Gatorade or other sugary powders! 😉 Look up some fruit infused water ideas or just add some lemon. It’s sooo good for you and can help break the craving for something besides water. Cucumber is pretty awesome and it’s sooo refreshing for a hot summer day! Pampered Chef’s Quick Stir Pitcher is perfect for making fruit infused water!
5. Drink it at room temperature
I used to be always be an ice water kind of gal. I have found though if you drink it at room temperature you can actually drink more of it! So give it a try at room temperature and see what you think!
6. Always have it with you
This part is key! Always keep it with you. Grab that water and keep it by you! So whether you are watching TV or out grocery shopping you always have quick access to staying hydrated!
7. Drink it different ways
Your daily recommended fluids doesn’t all mean a boring old glass of water! Tea is another great way to stay hydrated especially in the winter! Or iced tea in the summer! Just make sure you aren’t loading it up on sugar. 😉 I used to always drink sugar in my tea but now I drink it without. Try a tea with lots of flavor like a cinnamon and spice and chances are you won’t even miss it! 😊
8. Be active
Get some excercise!! Go for a walk, start an excercise routine or do some gardening. Sunshine and a hot day makes anyone thirsy. Make sure if you start exercising more and more you are adjusting your water intake accordingly to match your activity level!
9. Empty the fridge
Take out your pop, sugary drinks and so forth. If you are thirsty and you can’t grab your pop, you are much more likely to reach for a glass of water.
This sounds crazy to a lot of people but I am SO PICKY about how my water tastes. If you don’t like the taste of your water get something like a BRITA filter or a Reverse Osmosis system to help you out! That’s one reason I always carry water with me, that way I know I like the taste! 😉
