Don’t stop going out for dates because money is tight, be creative! Cheap dates are just as fun if not more than an expensive night out on the town. Here are 25 cheap date ideas to get you started!
1. $1 ice cream cones from McDonalds
Who doesn’t love ice cream?? For $2 you can both get a soft serve cone and sit outside and enjoy the sunshine!
Pack up some sandwhiches and some lemonade and have lunch in the park.
3. Home projects
What I mean by this is work around the house on a project you have been wanting to do. Do NOT go to Lowes or something because if you were like me, you’ll end up spending $100 on gray paint. So work with what you already have! Finishing painting a project you already have the stuff for or re-arrange all the furniture in your living room.
4. Share a coffee or treat
My husband and I love to go out and split or coffee or get a treat we don’t normally get. It’s not very exspensive if you share! 😊
5. Discount movies or drive in movies
The theater by our house used to do $5 movie days and that included 3D movies! It’s not as cheap as a rental, but it’s fun to go out and see a new movie. If you want to save money, don’t buy popcorn or a drink. Drive in movie theaters are hard to find but that’s a fun thing to do, too! 😊 Check in your area and find out when the discounts are!
6. Rent a movie
Pop in a cheap rental movie and pop a bag of popcorn and have a theater at home! You don’t have to go anywhere and you can enjoy the comfort of your own couch. My husband and I LOVE Vidangel where you can rent a movie for $1 (you have to “purchase” for $20 but you can sell it back for $19 in 24 hours) and edit the content to cut out swearing and stuff. This is a go to date night for us!
Browse the library for some good books, movies and music. It’s free plus it is just fun to look around together!
8. Half Price Books
Again, cheap movies and books! 😊 And again, it’s just fun to browse! We love going there for their records, too. We enjoy buying a record for a couple dollars and going home and listening to it together!
9. Barnes and Noble
Althought the books and records aren’t as a good a deal as Half Price, you can sit down and read their books in the cafe for free if you purchase something in the cafe. So grab a stack of books together, split a coffee and sit down and read together!
10. Walking or Hiking
Grab your walking shoes! You can go to a park or just walk around your neighborhood if you have sidewalks. Metro parks are really fun!
11. Window Shopping
OK, if you are an impulsive shopper this is a really bad idea. 😜 But if you can control yourself (or leave your wallet at home) it’s fun to walk and talk around a place with a lot of stores together. It’s also a great way to gather information for birthday gift ideas. 😉
12. Sunrise, sunset or star watching
Sit outside on a blanket and enjoy the view!
13. Backyard camping
If you have a tent pop it up and enjoy some time outdoors! And if you forget something or it gets too hot and rainy you can always run back inside.
14. Garage Sailing or Thrift Shopping
Walk around your neighborhood or hit up the local thrift stores to find some great bargains!
If you already own some bikes take them to the park and enjoy a joy ride! 😊
16. Driving and listening to music
My husband and I just enjoy driving with the sunroof open and some of our favorite music playing through the speakers! You can do this on the way to anything, too!
17. Christmas Lights
If it’s Christmas time, either drive or walk and look at all the beautiful Christmas displays in your area!
18. Local Entertainment
Small towns often times have free entertainment like plays or music in the park. Fireworks are a great date, too! Pay attention to your towns event schedule and enjoy some free entertainment!
19. Game night
Grab your favorite board game and have at it! We love playing card games or Taboo. This is a great thing to pick up at a thrift store, just check to make sure it has all the pieces. It’s also fun to try and learn a new game together so consider picking one you haven’t played before. Make it interesting, loser washes the dishes! 😉
20. Grocery shopping
This may sound boring, but make it fun by grabbing a treat and splitting it. (Pint of ice cream anyone? 😊) If you have a membership to Costco or Sam’s you can get a free meal just by walking around and trying all the samples! Free food is always fun! 😊
21. Free swimming holes or the beach
Depending on your area, there are often free places to go swimming like lakes or ponds. Just make sure swimming is allowed and you aren’t trespassing on someone’s property!
22. Share an appetizer and/or dessert at a restaurant
If you really love going to a restaurant, just go for an appetizer or a dessert and share! You’ll save money but you will still get to enjoy sitting at a nice table. Check your local coupons and deals, too!
23. Potluck with friends
Double date with your friends and fix a meal. Split so you do dinner and they do dessert. Evenings in with friends and good food is always a win!
24. Volunteer and service projects
Do you both love animals? Go and volunteer at the local shelter together! Or gather up a group and go visit nursing homes. It’s rewarding and a great experience together!
25. Video games
If you already have a game system it can be fun to play together! Challenging the other is fun, too! (Loser washes dishes again? 😜) Spencer and I loved playing Lego Star Wars together. It doesn’t matter if you are any good, we are both terrible! 😉
